JOHOR BARU: Iskandar Puteri community service centre will be donating RM1mil to the state police to help repair and upgrade police quarters in the city.
Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang said the flats housing police personnel were in Taman Melati, Taman Melor and Taman Kenanga with a total of 1,148 units housing about 1,000 families.
“The donation is an additional aid, apart from the RM20mil allocation from the Federal government for the three areas this year.
“The units are about 30-years-old and in dire need of repair works involving wiring, internal piping and the toilets,” he said after visiting the three areas here.
He was accompanied by state police deputy chief Comm Datuk Mohd Kamarudin Md Din.
Lim said the total estimated cost to repair and reconstruct the units was RM70mil. The upgrading works for the RM20mil allocation are still awaiting tender from the Public Works Department (JKR).
DCP Mohd Kamarudin said the allocation was insufficient to carry out repair works for all the units.
“We will request for more allocations next year.
“Of the 1,148 units, 188 units are in a sorry state. We will use 20% of the allocation to rebuild these units,” he added.
The units house police personnel from Johor Baru North, Johor Baru South, Iskandar Puteri, and Marine police.
Meanwhile, on the matter of an increase in housing allowance for police personnel, Lim said this can only be decided on in next year’s budget.
“I hope there will be something for the police personnel in the budget and the relevant ministry will look into this and help our men.
“In a New Malaysia, we want a top-class nation, which includes having a top-class police force,” he said.
