FIFTY-ONE representatives from 21 residents associations (RAs) in central Seberang Prai attended an outreach programme where they learned how to apply for grants from the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
The RA committee members attended two briefings, one from the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and another from the police, before they were taught how to fill up the forms to apply for the grants.
The briefings were conducted by AADK officer Anita Raman, who spoke on drug activities, and north Seberang Prai Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department chief Deputy Supt Mohammad Hafiz Kadir, who gave a talk on crime prevention and community safety.
Penang RoS assistant registration officer Nazihatul Farah Muhamad Nidzam said the representatives can apply for the grants, comprising RM10,000 for each RA, under the Geran Komuniti Penduduk 2019 (G-KOM) programme.
Applicants have to include their proposals for projects to be implemented when submitting their applications.
“Background checks will be conducted on the RAs to ensure that their annual reports are up to date.
“After the grants are approved, we will conduct an inspection within six months to ensure that their projects are done according to the proposal,” she said when met during the programme at the RoS office in Wisma Persekutuan, Kepala Batas, Penang, recently.
According to her, projects that can be implemented for safety purposes include the installation of CCTVs, purchasing of bicycles for patrols, walkie-talkies, tools for security and safety purposes, and the construction of link fencing and alarm systems.
The grants can also be applied to host programmes such as gotong-royong, health activities, maintenance works, and crime and drug prevention campaigns.
“This is an initiative to improve safety measures and promote harmonious activities among the community,” Nazihatul said.
The closing date for the submission of forms is Sept 30.
