ABOUT 150 children celebrated Earth Day 2019 at the USJ 12 community garden.
The five- and six-year-olds from R.E.A.L Kids USJ 12, Subang Jaya, were accompanied by 25 teachers.
Also present at the celebration were Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) deputy president Mohd Zulkurnain Che Ali, MPSJ councillor Lee Uyin Jen, officers from the Subang Jaya fire station and USJ 8 police station, USJ 12 community garden committee members and Zone 3 Residents’ Committee members.
R.E.A.L Kids Subang zone centre manager Adeline Sebastian said they put a lot of emphasis on children acquiring knowledge not only from books but beyond the classroom.
“Being in this community garden is a good way for them to appreciate Mother Nature.”
To commemorate Earth Day on April 22, guests also sang Heal The World by Michael Jackson, which is about the need to make the world a better place.
Ng said the celebration was not only for the children but serves as a reminder to adults about the importance of preserving the environment and reversing climate change.
“Our fight against climate change and to make our environment better is for the younger generation.
“We want them to be able to enjoy the environment that we did when growing up and not deprive them of what we experienced.”
Ng added that the location of the Earth Day celebration was appropriate as the garden was a green space specifically created for the community.
The USJ 12 community garden hydroponic greenhouse was also launched during the gathering.
At the close of the event, the children gave guests plants grown in recycled plastic bottles as well as painted rocks to take away.
