EDUCATION is key to the development of a country as it promotes economic growth and stability.

With this in mind, UOA Group is stepping in for the fourth time to sponsor RM60,000 worth of The Star’s Step Up education pullout.

Step Up is an English workbook-cum-activity pullout for primary school pupils. The pullout comes under the initiative of the Star-NiE (Newspaper-in-Education) programme.

“The young generation will be the future leaders of Malaysia.

“By educating them through initiatives such as Star-NiE, we are not only investing in their future, but also supporting the effort to promote literacy and lifelong learning,” said UOA Group executive director Kim Ang after presenting a mock cheque to Star Media Group chief content officer Esther Ng.

In line with the company’s tag line “Building excellence”, Ang hopes that the sponsorship will help improve English proficiency in schools and inculcate good reading habits among pupils.

“English has become the universal language of communication due to globalisation, and mastering the language is vital in producing quality and competent graduates.

“Having English proficiency has become vital for success in today’s competitive business world. As we live and work in a global society, it is important for us to see English as the language of communication not only when dealing with business counterparts and peers, but also with foreigners and tourists,” she added.

Ang said the sponsorship demonstrated UOA Group’s commitment to educational excellence.

“We hope that programmes like Star-NiE will help encourage Malaysia’s future generations to constantly learn, innovate and reinvent themselves to meet the fast-changing needs of a globalised world,” she said.

Previously, UOA Group had sponsored The Star ePaper to Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman’s (UTAR) Kampar and Sungai Long campuses as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.

Step Up is a colourful 24-page educational pullout designed for pupils in Years Four, Five and Six to help them ace their UPSR (Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah).

The pullout features Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese translations of difficult English words.

The version with the Bahasa Malaysia translation is published on alternate Tuesdays while the version with Chinese translation comes out on alternate Thursdays.
