JOHOR: A beautifully simple “Kindness Hut” project by the students of SK Seri Idaman has helped the small school of 102 students win its first national-level competition - while spreading kindness throughout the community.
The school’s Standard Six students have been decorating a hut with letters on kindness written by their juniors, who then receive “Kindness Badges” with positive messages from the seniors.
“We Standard Six students led the whole campaign. We collected the letters, distributed the badges and put it on display at the Kindness Hut,” said student Nur Khairunnisa, 12.

Teacher Azlan Mohd Yusuf said the project is already making a difference, both in school and the community.
“Since the kindness campaign started, people are more jovial and smile a lot more, and it goes beyond the school. Students go home and get their parents involved in writing letters. It’s rippling outwards,” he said.
Response has been so good, Azlan said students are gathering at the hut every recess now.
“We are definitely going to try and keep this going throughout the year and continue into next year,” said Azlan.
The Kindness Hut was the students’ submission for the #StandTogether National Kindness Week competition by R.AGE and SP Setia, where grants of up to RM1,000 were awarded to the 40 schools with the best “Kindness Project” ideas.
Despite having just 102 students, the school managed to make it into the Top 10 of the competition, earning them a celebrity school visit from popular social media creators Luqman Podolski and Adib Alexx.
