SUNGAI Prai along Taman Sembilang, Penang, will be upgraded for canoeing activities following good response from the public during the Prai River Canoeing Festival.
Penang Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin, who kicked off the event held in conjunction with the International Day of Action for Rivers 2019, also took part in the canoeing with 80 other participants.
“Sungai Prai is an essential river for our community and people and there is a need to keep it clean.
“I was informed that PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had canoed from Sungai Dua to Ampang Jajar for an event,” he said after the Prai River Canoeing Festival launching ceremony recently.
Dr Afif, who is also Seberang Jaya assemblyman, added that the event was organised by his Seberang Jaya constituency office with the co-operation of Think City Sdn Bhd and the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) to highlight the parks along Sungai Prai.
“We are now looking for non-governmental organisations, societies or even communities to organise programmes to utilise the river.”
“We will develop the area with Think City to have more activities such as water sports, walking and jogging by the river,” he said.
Also present was Think City senior programme executive Nicol Thum.
Apart from canoeing, other activities like soap and organic fertiliser-making workshops, and a children’s art competition were also held.
International Day of Action for Rivers is celebrated annually on March 14 by the international communities all over the world.
For this year, there were more than 50 programmes held in 35 countries worldwide.
