THE Malaysian Digital Association (MDA) held the third edition of the “d Awards19” to honour and boost digital creative strategies that have carved new ways to market products locally.

This year, there were 203 entries and 14 winners. It included the first-ever categories for Malaysia: Best Tech Developer, Best Digital Publisher of the Year and Best Use of Digital Innovation (Non-Profit/Pro-Bono) Campaign work.

Thirty-eight agencies and publishers submitted their works, marking an increase in entries and participating companies.

“This indicates the growing importance that industry players place in increasing the standards of their works and the prominence of the industry event itself,” said

d Awards19 organising chairman and PHD Malaysia managing director Eileen Ooi.

“This may be the third edition of the revitalised d Awards19 but we are nonetheless cognisant of its emergence as the premier awards in the country.”

MDA president Serm Teck Choon, who is also CtrlShift Malaysia Sdn Bhd country manager, said, “This year’s event has succeeded in recognising talents, brands and publishers that embrace and use technologies in digital marketing to produce innovative works in designing and executing campaigns as well as developing digital products.”

He said the awards adopted a holistic approach which included a glamorous ceremony with efforts to educate and empower participants and industry players on how to create great digital products and execute effective marketing campaigns.

“Regardless of the participants’ achievements in the d Awards19, MDA hopes the event has offered great insight to all as they make an effort to keep improving themselves in this exciting industry,” Serm said.

Universal McCann was honoured twice with the coveted Grand Prix award for its “KFC Optimisation on Steroids” campaign and the Digital Impact of the Year award.

Magnus Games Studio co-founder Gan Hak Chian was declared the Digital Person of the Year.

Media Prima Bhd was declared the Best Digital Publisher of the Year, while Hyperlab won gold two awards for its Best Use of Digital Innovation (Non-Profit/Pro-bono) Campaign, in collaboration with The Star’s R.AGE team in “Innovating Sex Education in Malaysia”, and as the Best Tech Developer.

The Star Media Group won gold in the Best Platform Development category for its R.AGE campaign coverage entitled “Predator In My Phone”.

It won silver in the Best Digital Publisher of The Year with The Star Online portal.

To ease the tension halfway through the ceremony, an interactive game came was activated on stage to engage guests in some fun trivia.

The MDA was established in 2009 as a registered society, and this year marked its 10th anniversary with the awards as part of the celebration.

Primarily, the focus is on growing the digital advertising pie and delivering a single standard currency of measurement of Malaysian internet traffic.

The MDA is managed by an elected council consisting of a president and 12 members representing an equal mix of media, publishers, services and specialists.

It unifies all sectors involved in the various aspects of digital media and advertising as a profession and as a business, thereby representing and securing the long-term interest of the digital publishing and advertising industry in Malaysia.
