PETROSAINS, The Discovery Centre concluded its 20th anniversary celebration on a high note on March 31, attracting more than 21,000 visitors and selling out admission tickets almost every day during the celebration which was held from March 23 to 31 at Petrosains’ main centre in Suria KLCC.
The celebration was also extended to its Petrosains PlaySmart satellite centres in Kuantan, Johor Baru and Kota Kinabalu.
Petrosains, the corporate social responsibility arm of Petronas in the pillar of STEM education, also received a special visit when Petronas president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin and Puan Sri Dr Azura Ahmad Tajuddin dropped by on the last day of the celebration.
During the week-long celebration, visitors were treated to various fun and exciting activities inside the centre as well as at The Galleria area of Petrosains.
There were many workshops organised, including how to prototype a “water level indicator”, create a “gas detector”, learn to design and make 3D models via 3D printing – just to name a few which attracted full capacity for the workshop rooms with a waiting list for participation.
Talks were conducted by prominent academicians with popular sessions drawing full house to topics such as Radiation in Our Daily Life by Dr Faizal Mohamed of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Amazing Snake Venoms by Dr Tan Choo Hock of Universiti Malaya (UM) and A Tiny World Called Nano by Dr Ong Boon Hoong from UM.
Talented Petrosains science communicators as well as science busking teams also had the audience enthralled with their science shows and mini science shows on laser, cryogenics, 3D elements, robotics and Internet of Things (IoT) and many more.
Stage performances by local artistes such as Caliph Buskers, Amir Jahari and Colour of Voices and many others added more colours to the festival.
Based on feedback received, visitors of the festival were very pleased with the activities organised and were happy to have spent an enjoyable and educational time during the week-long celebration which also coincided with the March 2019 school holidays.
Admission was free on the anniversary day of March 25 and a special 20% discount thereafter during the week. Visitors accessed the main centre and participated in the activities, workshops and talks at the Galleria at no extra cost.

As the CSR platform of Petronas in the pillar of STEM education, we hope to continue delivering more creative and impactful learning experiences that will inspire people, especially the younger generation, in STEM.

Since opening its doors on March 25, 1999, Petrosains has managed to reach millions of people through various platforms such as through in-reach and outreach programmes, its travelling exhibitions Petrosains DinoTrek 2 and Petronas PlaySmart, community events such as the Petrosains Science Festival as well as its signature competitions, the Petrosains Science Show Competition and Petrosains Robotics Challenge.
The Petrosains 20th anniversary celebration will be continued for the rest of the year through many different activities at its main centre in Suria KLCC and its Petrosains PlaySmart satellite centres in Kuantan, Johor Baru and Kota Kinabalu.
