JOHOR BARU: Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) is partnering with Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro) to help more small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Johor to penetrate the halal market in Japan.
Matrade Southern Regional Office director Zuaziezie Zulkefli said that there is a strong demand for Malaysian halal products in Japan that should be taken up by the SMEs in the state.
“Johor is the leading state in halal products in Malaysia so the government, through Matrade, is calling out to all SMEs that wish to expand their business to Japan to come forward and register with us.
“One of the best platforms for SMEs to participate is through the upcoming Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) in April this year where Matrade will also organise International Sourcing Programme (INSP),” he said.
He was met by reporters after giving a presentation at a seminar titled ‘Business Opportunities on Japan’s Halal Industry’ at Puteri Pacific Hotel.
Zuaziezie added that INSP will bring over 13 Japanese buyers who are looking to source ingredients, food and beverage, apparels and healthcare products.
“The reason why we are focusing on Japan is because of the upcoming Tokyo Olympic 2020 and the 62nd-anniversary celebration of Malaysia-Japan diplomatic relations,” he said.
He added that Japan was Malaysia’s third largest halal export destination in 2017 with export valued at RM2.8bil, a growth of 5.6% from RM2.6bil in 2016.
The top three products with the highest export value were halal ingredients (RM1.3bil), food and beverage (RM1.1bil) and palm oil derivatives (RM150mil).
Zuaziezie added that Matrade is also targeting exhibitors from 70 countries at Mihas 2019, which is going to be held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) on April 3-6.
Mihas is a top sourcing platform for halal products and services, is in its 16th edition this year.
