UCSI’s seventh National Science and Math Quiz competition 2019 beckons SPM or O-Level students who are keen to take on the challenge.

This quiz, which is in support of the Higher Education Ministry’s initiative to promote Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), aims to test students’ knowledge and critical thinking in mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics, and to foster a love for these subjects to pursue studies and careers in STEM fields.

It is a platform for students to:

l Solve daily mathematical problems using critical thinking skills.

l Develop their creative and cognitive capabilities.

l Gauge their knowledge level and speed of thought in solving science and mathematics questions.

l Learn to work together as a team and foster friendship among participants from various states in Malaysia.

This year, the UCSI Science and Maths Quiz will feature a state-level challenge and a national-level challenge.

Participants are to register by teams, comprising three students from the same school in one team.

At state level, however, students will be challenged on an individual basis with a written test consisting of 60 multiple-choice questions which must be completed within an hour.

The individual marks of the members from the same team will then be added together.

The top four teams from each state-level challenge will go on to the national-level challenge final round.

At the national final, there will be two sessions. The four teams from each state-level challenge will compete in the semi-final rounds. This will be the buzzer session whereby the groups will try to be the first to press the buzzer to answer the question.

The team with the highest score from each semi-final round will proceed to the final round. Only four teams will qualify for the final, and from there the champion, first runner-up and second runner-up will emerge.

Attractive prizes and bursaries are to be won. Full tuition fee bursary will be awarded to the champion while the first and second runners-up will get RM45,000 and RM30,000 worth of bursary respectively. Participants will receive a certificate of participation.

While the quiz is open to SPM or O-Level candidates, the questions are not necessarily limited to the SPM/IGCSE curriculum. Details of the quiz are as follow:

State-level challenge (preliminary round): Kuala Lumpur and Selangor – UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur campus (March 30); Penang – SMJK Perempuan China (April 6); Ipoh – Shen Jai High School (April 6); Johor – Foon Yew High School Johor Baru (April 6).
