Yashnee’s book Hidden Messages contains her poems which she wrote while dealing with personal teenage issues.

TWO years ago, Yashnee Periasamy had to grasp with issues faced by teenagers but instead of being overcome by her problems, the teen empowered herself through writing.

Today, the quiet 14-year-old is a self-published author of a poetry book called Hidden Messages, inspired by the challenges of being a teenager.

“I was going through a rough patch that affected my mental health but I knew I needed an outlet, so I started to write, something I have always loved doing,” she said.

Initially, she was not drawn to  poetry but admitted to having a love for rhyming words.

Yashnee managed to write 82 poems in three months, an accomplishment given her school schedule and Year Six examinations at that time.

“After that, I knew I wanted to publish a book with my work. It has always been a dream to write a book someday but I never thought about its content until I finished my poems,” Yashnee added.

Getting the book published was not easy, as most publishers rejected the idea before Partridge Publishing finally agreed.

Her father, Dr Periasamy Gunasekaran, helped pick up the tab for the publishing cost while her mother helped with the illustrations, a family effort that she is grateful for.

One person advised her to drop the idea of publishing the book, saying she was too young for such a venture.

The teenager said she was not sure if the people were looking out for her or had expected her to fail.

“I honestly do not know why they felt the way they did but I had the courage to do it. I thought if I failed I would just continue what I loved doing which is writing,” she said.

Yashnee said she got to where she is today by shrugging off the negative voices that held her back initially.

She hopes her story will inspire others to venture out and do something they have always wanted to do.

“I do hope people take up the courage to do something even though there could be a voice at the back of their head telling them not to proceed,” she added.
