Cellist Roman will be one of the featured performers next year.

THE Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will be starting its season in January instead of the August-to-July European orchestra schedule previously.

MPO chief executive officer Sareen Risham said the music offerings this season at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) feature a diversity of choices with a spectrum of wide-ranging genres.

“From MPO’s interpretations of its staple repertoire to film music, pop and rock, we have something for everyone.”

MPO’s new resident conductor Gerard Salonga will usher in the new year and share conducting engagements with the current resident conductor Naohisa Furusawa.

For the first time, MPO will present all-female composition concerts which coincide with International Women’s Day in March.

Themed Women In Music, the special concert will be helmed by Jessica Cottis who returns to conduct the MPO after Ola Bola–Movie With Live Music in 2017.

Stretching its musical versatility, the MPO presents concerts themed Beatbox Symphony, a collaboration with Tom Thum, an award winning beatboxer, in March.

The MPO will also bring back the Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy in April, after its successful presentations in 2012 and 2014.

Following the success of The Music of Hans Zimmer concerts last season, the MPO will pay a similar tribute to Hollywood film composer, James Horner, in May.

In conjunction with the final instalment of Star Wars sequel trilogy, the MPO will perform a broad survey of music from its entire series in December.

Movie screenings with the MPO’s live music accompaniment has always been

a favourite among audiences and Raiders

of the Lost Ark will be featured in September.

Classical luminaries making a comeback on the DFP podium this season include Mark Wigglesworth, Roberto Abbado, Stanislav Kochanovsky, Olari Elts, Jac van Steen, Arnie Roth and Hans Graf.

This season will also witness the return of violinists Akiko Suwanai and Tianwa Yang.

Making their debut with the MPO are

cellist Joshua Roman, pianist Llyr Williams, clarinetist Annelien van Wauwe, and violinists Ryu Goto and Grace Clifford.

MPO Youth Brand Ambassador Tengku Irfan will return to dazzle piano fans this season, together with other local artists such as soprano Ang Mei Foong, baritone Mak Chi Hoe and magician Chase Lew.

For local music lovers, Rock Tri-O scheduled in November will feature Datuk Hattan, Hazama and Azlan Typewriter while songstress Misha Omar will perform in a solo concert in August.

Tickets for the new season will go on sale from Dec 20.
