TEENAGER Jasper Mark Cheun Han has a spinal deformity and needs to go for an operation soon.

His mother, part-time waitress Karen Khor Pooi Mun, 39, said Jasper, 13, was diagnosed with congenital scoliosis at the age of three.

Congenital scoliosis causes the backbone to curve sideways.

“When he was three, he had an accident and broke his right arm and that was when his condition was diagnosed.

“I took him to the University of Malaya Medical Centre in September and was told that his condition is worsening,” she said during a press conference organised by Perak Barisan Nasional Public Service and Complaints Bureau chief Mohd Rawi Abdullah in Ipoh.

“If he doesn’t go for the operation, the spine will bend more and compress his organs, especially his lungs.

“In a few years, he would be wheelchair-bound if nothing is done,” she said, adding that they need RM32,000 for the operation.

Khor is a single mother raising Jasper and his younger brother.

“I earn about RM600 a month and cannot afford to pay for my son’s operation which has been scheduled for March 26.”

Khor said her son’s condition had prevented him from taking part in outdoor activities.

“He loves to play badminton but his body will ache after that,” she said, adding that Jasper could not lift heavy items.

Mohd Rawi hopes the public will help.
