Work on collapsed slope to wrap up in March

WORK to fix the slope in Jalan Persekutuan (FT006) at 28.75KM of the Jalan Bayan Lepas-Balik Pulau stretch in Penang which collapsed is expected to complete by March.

State Works and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said only one lane would be opened until the completion of the repair work.

“On Nov 7, we received a letter from the Public Works Department (JKR) about the RM1.7mil allocation for the repair.

“The work will take three to four months to complete,” he told a press conference at the state assembly recently.

Zairil added that the stretch would be assessed for other potential danger.

Also present was state JKR deputy director Mohd Fisal Ismail.

Since Oct 23, only one lane of the two-way road has been opened for light vehicles to make way for the earth clearing and slope repair works.

Currently, there are three main routes connecting Balik Pulau to George Town apart from the Jalan Bayan Lepas-Balik Pulau road where the slope collapsed in October.

The other two routes are the narrow Teluk Bahang-Balik Pulau road and the steep Jalan Tun Sardon-Balik Pulau which might not be suitable for heavy vehicles.
