I-CITY in Shah Alam reached another milestone with the grand opening of its i-City Convention Centre @ CentralWalk, adjacent to its up-and-coming shopping centre.
“This launch is very important for us as it marks our formal entry into the MICE (Meeting, Incentives, Conferencing and Exhibitions) sector.
“We can now package the convention centre, theme park and hotel for the MICE industry,” said I-Berhad deputy chairman Datuk Eu Hong Chew during the launch.
The 0.18ha convention centre, which has 6,500 parking bays, provides a platform for residents and foreign visitors to host weddings, meetings and events as it can house 1,000 guests in a banquet-style seating or 2,000 guests in a theatre-style seating.
It will soon be joined by two other convention centres, three hotels, a medical hub and a shopping mall.
Eu said this was part of the RM3bil Tourism Masterplan for i-City to transform Shah Alam into a leisure, shopping, hospitality and medical hub.
Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, who was also present, said the ministry always encouraged more developers to build on the MICE concept.
“The MICE sector is where business travellers spend two or three times more than regular travellers, that is why we encourage the private sector to invest in MICE,” he said before opening the convention centre.
Muhammad Bakhtiar said the place was unique because of the link to a mall, hotels in the vicinity and other attractions.
“Business travellers tend to stay longer after their meetings here or they return with their families to enjoy the local sights,” he said.
