MIRI: All it took was three hours of non-stop rain for floodwaters to rise a metre high in parts of Lawas.
Jalan Trusan and Kampung Siang Siang were among the areas hit by flash floods in Sarawak’s northernmost district yesterday.
Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said the Lawas fire station had to carry out an emergency rescue operation at 5.30am.
“A vehicle was caught in floodwaters along Jalan Trusan and personnel used a boat to rescue those trapped inside.
“No villagers have been evacuated yet,” said the department in an update.
Rosy Lekiu of Kampung Siang Siang said when she woke up at 5am, the compound of her house was covered in water.
“This is a low-lying area and the drains are small.
“This area will usually flood whenever there is heavy rain,” she said.
Sarawak authorities are preparing for the landas season which is the equivalent to the monsoon in the peninsula states.
