Construction sites adding to KL flash floods, 'something' must be done, says Zuraida

Minister of Housing and Local Government Zuraida Kamaruddin at the Malaysia Civil Servants Housing Project- Residensi Bayu Andaman topping-off launch in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur on Nov 13

AMPANG JAYA: Construction sites are contributing to flash floods in and around Kuala Lumpur and they have to do something to stop it, said Zuraida Kamaruddin.

The Minister of Housing and Local Government said methods to stop flash floods caused by construction sites would be reviewed and studied by the Ministry.

“It is the rainy season and there are many construction (projects) going on. We have to look into this,” she said at the Malaysia Civil Servants Housing Project- Residensi Bayu Andaman topping-off launch in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur.

Zuraida, who is also the Ampang MP, had earlier visited Lorong Kolam Ayer Lama in Ampang Jaya where frequent flash floods damage houses and roads, among others.

The residents complained that their houses have been flooded with muddy water more than 15 times in the last decade. They blamed it on the many development projects surrounding their neighbourhood.

Commenting on the visit, Zuraida said works on the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Expressway (SUKE) construction site disrupted the water flow and caused the flash floods.

“I have contacted the SUKE developer and asked them to put men on standby every time it rains to clear any block that will cause flash floods, as an interim measure.

“The Public Works Department has its own standard operating procedure in enforcement but I am not sure if it is being done strictly or not.

“Enforcement has to be strong and strict. We cannot allow this to continue,” she said.
