JOHOR BARU: Politeknik Mersing was selected to represent Malaysia at the International Festival of Malay Art 2018 at Alun-Alun Engku Putri in Indonesia’s Batam Island from Nov 1 to 3.

The three-day festival also saw countries such as Brunei, China, India, Myanmar and Thailand participating alongside host country Indonesia.

The event featured religious and artistic treasures of the Malay culture in cultural performances, customs and traditional games.

Politeknik Mersing director Hassan Siraj said the polytechnic’s dance group, known as Seri Mersing Johor, was made up of eight dancers and six musicians.

They performed the Zapin Tenglu and Zapin Pulau dances at the event.

“Batam mayor H. Muhammad Rudi personally invited us to perform at the event,” he said in a statement, adding that the event attracted 10,000 spectators.

Hassan said the two zapin dances featured fishermen who brought in a bounty of catch from the sea. — By REMAR NORDIN
