MELAKA: The Melaka government will be celebrating this year’s state-level National Sports Day on a Sunday instead of the second Saturday of October which has been the norm since 2015.
This is because the second Saturday of October this year falls on Oct 13, which coincides with the 80th birthday of the Melaka Governor Tun Dr Mohd Khalil Yaakob.
State Communications, Multimedia, Youth and Sports Development Committee chairman Kerk Chee Yee said the state-level National Sports Day will be held on Oct 14 instead.
He said the celebration, which will take place at the Masjid Tanah Sports Complex near here, will be launched by Chief Minister Adly Zahari.
“The celebration will also be held simultaneously at the parking area of Mydin hypermarket in Ayer Keroh for the Melaka Tengah district level.
“For the Jasin district level, the celebration will take place at the futsal arena of Jasin Hotsprings in Bemban,” he said at a press conference at the state Youth and Sports Department (JBSNM) in Ayer Keroh.
JBSNM director Marina Nafi and sports assistant director Mohd Jazwin Abd Rahman were present at the announcement.
Kerk said about 40,000 people were expected to take part in the state-level celebration, while 4,000 was expected to join in the Melaka Tengah and Jasin district-level celebration.
He said 17 events, including street soccer, zumbathon, obstacle race and fitness challenge, will be open to participants on that day.
“The public can visit the JBSNM Facebook page for further details,” he said.
