A TOTAL of 480 packets of rice weighing five kilos each were distributed among senior citizens from poor families in George Town.

They were all smiles when they received a packet and a RM20 angpow each at the ‘Sharing Love with Senior Citizens’ event at the Kedah Road Flats.

Some of the recipients were seen with bagpacks with wheels and shopping carts as many were unable to carry back the packets of rice.

Retiree Teoh Mei Li, 67, said the contribution would be enough to feed her and her family for a few months.

The event was jointly organised by KRT George Town, JCI George Town and Inspiration Hair Design recently.

JCI George Town president Kyara Ng said that the initiative was to mark the upcoming International Day of Peace on Sept 21.

“The purpose of the project is to promote that peace is possible and the peace with love spirit.

“We want to show our love to the senior citizens, which includes the disabled, through this programme,” she said.

Also present were Penang Island City councillor Gerald Mak, Jalan Kedah neighbourhood committees (KRT) advisor Ng Song Kheng, Jalan Kedah neighbourhood committees (KRT) president Tay Chye Hock and Inspiration Hair Design founder Steve Ooi.

At the event, some 360 senior citizens also got a free haircut by five hairstylists from Inspiration Hair Design.

The event was also sponsored by Top One Digital Shop.
