MIRI: Wonderful dance performances, colourful costumes and patriotic songs were the order of the day in Miri city yesterday.
State leaders and ethnic community representatives as well as students and youths put up a colourful show of patriotism.
In conjunction with the state-level National Day hosted by Miri city, they sang patriotic songs and waved state and national flags during the grand celebration at the Miri Pullman Hotel.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg and state cabinet ministers took part together with about 1,000 community and business leaders, students and youths.
There were no speeches but a simple banquet was held to mark the event.
Nonetheless, it was a meaningful event that brought the people together, said a community chief from Sibuti, Joni Libong.
“Every year, I have been invited to attend the state-level celebration wherever it is held. This year it is here in Miri and I came here with all the other community leaders from my area. It is good to attend and take part in such state and national events. We are part of one country. Even though we are from many states in the country we all belong to Malaysia,” said Joni.
Student Florence Tai Ching Li said she and her schoolmates were asked to stage a dance.
“The theme of our dance was children of the country. We wore as many types of ethnic Sarawak traditional costumes,” she said.
There were smiles and laughter all over including from politicians who attended the event.
