SEVERAL roads in George Town, Penang, will be closed to motorists in conjunction with the state-level National Day 2018 parade rehearsal on Wednesday.
The roads will be closed from 6.30am to noon to allow 118 contingents to carry out the full-dress rehearsal.
The affected roads are Lebuh Farquhar-Lebuh Leith junction, Lebuh Farquhar-Lebuh Light, Lebuh Light-Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah, Lebuh King-Lebuh Bishop junction, Weld Quay-Lebuh Chulia, Lebuh Pantai-Lebuh Chulia traffic lights, Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling-Lebuh Chulia traffic lights and Lebuh Light-Jalan Mesjid Kapitan Keling.
Other stretches that will be closed include Lebuh Downing-Weld Quay, Weld Quay-Gat Lebuh Cina, Lebuh Gereja-Lebuh Pantai, Gat Lebuh Cina-Lebuh Pantai and the roundabout at Lebuh Pantai.
The same roads will also be closed for the actual parade on Aug 31 from 6.30am to noon.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Omar said there would be about 320 police personnel on duty during the rehearsal and on Aug 31, including traffic policemen to facilitate the parade and ensure there are no hiccups during the event.
“This year, we expect about 20,000 visitors to throng the Esplanade to watch the parade,” he added.
Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, state exco members, MPs, state assemblymen and other state dignitaries will attend the event.
