ISKANDAR PUTERI: Parents and guardians are advised to send their children only to childcare centres that are registered with the relevant authorities.

Johor Women Development and Tourism Committee chairman Liow Cai Tung said they must make sure that the childcare centres had the certificate of registration under Section 7 of the Child Care Centre Act 1984.

She added that under the Child Care Centre Regulations 2012, all childcare centres were also required to register with the relevant authorities in order for them to operate.

The premises also need to fulfil various requirements including fire prevention, safety and cleanliness, and they should be properly maintained.

Liow said registered childcare centres must have operators and caretakers with Early Childhood Care qualifications.

“This can reduce the risk of negligence caused by unqualified operators and caretakers,’’ she said when replying to question from Muhamaad Taqiuddin Cheman (PH-Pulai Sebatang).

Taqiuddin asked about the steps taken to ensure the safety and well-being of children at childcare centres, and assistance for depressed mothers.

Liow said Welfare Department officials were given the authority to conduct periodic monitoring and spot checks to ensure that childcare centres abide by the rules.

She said immediate action could be taken if complaints were lodged against the childcare centre, and negligent operators would be slapped with compounds.

“For serious cases, the authorities may order the childcare centre to close,’’ said Liow.

She said the Welfare Department provided counselling service to assist mothers whose children died or were injured at the childcare centres.

Liow said counsellors from the department would conduct house visit to give psychological support to parents, siblings and families of the victims.

She said the counsellors would hold sessions either at the houses of the victims or they could come to the department to attend the sessions.

“We will refer them to the Psychiatric Department of nearby hospitals for further treatment,’’ said Liow.
