HEALTH and fitness enthusiasts flocked to MidValley Exhibition Centre, Kuala Lumpur, to learn loads of healthy tips and latest fitness trends at the seventh edition of Star Health Expo 2018. 

From fitness demos to health talks and physical activities, fun games to product offers, there was something for everyone at the three-day event.

The expo themed “Get Fit. Live Great!” was aimed at inspiring Malaysians to lead a healthy lifestyle by adopting a holistic approach that includes physical and mental health, emotional well-being and financial wellness.

Keeping fit and healthy is serious business, reflected by the high visitor turnout for the annual fair throughout the years.

The Great Eastern Life booths were abuzz with excitement as visitors both young and old enjoyed the fun activities while staying active at the same time.

The popular Live Great Dodgeball Open made a comeback, which had participants and visitors stopping to watch and cheer the participants on.

Lukman Sabri, 33, said his family had a fun day watching the Live Great Dodgeball Open 2018. With him were his wife Azimah Ramli, 32, and their five-year-old son Ziad Iman.

Many visitors took the opportunity to put their courage and strength to the test by trying out the Live Great Sky Track where they were required to navigate four high-rope obstacles that were set 6m above the ground.

After scaling down the wall, Yusei Miyake, eight, said it was a scary experience but he had so much fun that he wanted to do it again. Joining Yusei were his father Satoshi Miyake, 36, and Koya Miyake, six.

Avid gamers were attracted to the Live Great Kinect Workout, an interactive Xbox game that provides a simple workout for all ages.

Another highlight was the Live Great Kinetic Bike Race, which saw participants challenging each other while burning calories.

As for those who wanted to stimulate their minds, the Laser Maze challenged participants’ agility, flexibility and strategic thinking.

Mei Lee Chen, 46, and her four-year-old daughter Clarabelle Ee were seen expressing their creativity at the Button Badge Workshop by customising button badges.

The inaugural Live Great Healthy Brekkie Challenge, which saw 12 contestants preparing a healthy breakfast using 110 ingredients; the number of ingredients chosen specifically to match Great Eastern Life’s 110th anniversary this year.

Law student Lim Jas Lin, 20, emerged champion with her winning cold cut turkey ham sandwich, held ­together with aioli (mayonnaise seasoned with garlic), a simple sandwich which she loved.

Judges for the challenge were renowned local chef Datuk Redzuawan Ismail, known fondly as Chef Wan, Sunway Le Cordon Bleu technical director and cuisine chef instructor Rodolphe Onno and DC Restaurant chef-owner Darren Chin.

Other fun activities included the drum circle where participants sat in a circle playing drums to create a group rhythm, moderated by a facilitator.

The makulele, an afro Brazilian dance, also received good response from visitors who enjoyed learning about the dance that requires holding a pair of sticks.

Visitors also danced to their hearts’ content through Sh’bam, an insanely addictive dance workout, as well as Zumba, a fitness party with a blend of Latin and international rhythms.

In addition to the exciting activities, the event also connects the public with medical practitioners as well as health and lifestyle experts.

There were free basic health checks at booths by KPJ Healthcare Bhd and eye checks by Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital.

“At this age, we tend to have a lot of health problems. Luckily, my vision is still good, ” said Ng Kin Kin, 60, after she got her eyes tested.

There was also a variety of health and wellness services such as Doctor On Call. It is a service that allows the public to consult a doctor online without making a clinic or hospital visit, said co-founder and director Maran Virumandi.

BioMark is an app that provides access to lab test results online, which its head of business development Dr Izzhar Putra said will empower Malaysians to take charge of their health.

Star Health Expo 2018 was organised by I.Star Events Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Star Media Group Bhd with Great Eastern Life as the exclusive event partner.

Star Health Expo will be heading to SPICE Arena, Penang from Nov 2 to 4.
