Council to kick the plastic habit

Rozali speaking to council staff during the corporate gathering in Bandar Perda.

PLASTIC water bottles and straws are now things of the past at Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) meetings and events.

Council president Datuk Rozali Mohamud said the ban was to promote environmental conservation and cut down on plastic waste.

He said this move, affecting over 800 staff members at MPSP’s Bandar Perda headquarters, would eventually influence the way of life for society at large.

“We realise that, very often, these plastic bottles and straws end up in public drainage.

“The plastic waste clogs drains and flows out to sea where marine animals mistake the straws as worms or grass and try to eat them. This suffocates them.

“By cutting down on the use of plastic and being responsible, we reduce the burden on nature,” he said during the council’s corporate gathering in Bandar Perda on Friday.

At the event, Rozali congratulated 43 MPSP staff whose contributions were recognised during the investiture ceremony to mark the 80th birthday of the Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas.

He said that among them were nine MPSP general workers involved in 3D (dangerous, difficult and dirty) work, who received the Pingat Jasa Masyarakat (PJM) award.
