THE live screening of the final match of FIFA World Cup 2018 in Penang turned into a celebration for France supporters when the Les Bleus claimed World Cup for the first time after 20 years.

Away from their country, a group of French tourists who were at the Esplanade to watch the match were overjoyed when France trounced Croatia with a 4-2 victory.

They ran to the stage where a mega screen was installed, waving their France football scarves and jerseys, and celebrated the success with a replica trophy.

Some other France supporters also joined them in the celebration.

Louis Chew, 27, who supported France, said it was an exciting game and it was fun to watch the match together with other supporters at the Esplanade.

“The atmosphere was nice aswe could hear people cheering for their team,” he said after the match.

However, some Croatia supporters were left disappointed with the country’s defeat.

Among them was K. Guneson, 42.

He felt that Croatia played well but the team just lacked some luck.

“I really wished to see how the European team writes its history to win the cup for the first time.

“I hope that they could come back strong and do even better in the next World Cup,” he said.

Earlier, football fans were in high spirit cheering for their favourite team at the mega screening of the final match between France and Croatia.

Thousands put on jerseys and tied the scarves of their team on the shoulder or head and gathered to watch the exciting match.

Some also painted the flag of their favourite teams on their faces to show support.

Earlier in his speech, state Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said he hoped to work together with the Youth and Sports Ministry to organise more sporting events for youths.

He said the government is committed to build more stadiums with international standards for local athletes and footballers to have better training facilities.

The crowds were entertained with several dance and stage performances.

They also enjoyed themselves with food and drinks from food trucks lining along Jalan Padang Kota Lama.
