SIBU: Sahabat Amanah Tanjung Manis, a branch of Parti Amanah is fast making inroads into the Tanjung Manis constituency despite only being set up in January this year.

Its chief, Mohamad Fadillah Sabali, said they started with only 10 members but the number has swelled to 200 now.

“We have set up the branch just in time for GE14 where I was the candidate for the Tanjung Manis seat,” he said.

In the election, Mohamad Fadillah lost to Yusuf Abd Wahab of PBB by a majority of 8,674 votes. He polled 2,728 votes against 11,402 votes for Yusuf.

The members, he said, comprised people various races and from various professions including farmers, fishermen, and contractors.

According to Mohamad, the perception of the local people has started to change after Pakatan Harapan formed the new government at the Federal level, with Parti Amanah as one of the component parties.

“Previously, PBB was the only party in the area leaving the people with no political choices. But with Pakatan as the new government and with Amanah setting a branch here, the people now have a better platform to voice out their views,” he added.

The party was given the right to set up the branch in Tanjung Manis following an understanding with DAP and PKR.

“In GE13, PAS contested the seat but as PAS is not a party in Pakatan, Amanah, with the consensus of DAP and PKR, was given the right to set up a branch,” he said.

Amanah will contest in the two state seats of Semop and Kuala Rajang in the 2021 state election, he added.

Mohamad Fadillah said they were confident of recruiting more members as response from the locals has been very encouraging in its many activities held recently.

The branch gave out food items to the needy in the constituency especially during the recent Hari Raya celebrations.

Mohamad Fadillah, who is a full-time politician, said that as their service centre was yet to be set up, they were acting on a mobile basis.

“We will open our service centre in Tanjung Manis once we have the budget but for now, we are functioning on a mobile basis,” he said.
