Leong started exploring the world of business while she was still in Form 6.

Some entrepreneurs start their businesses early in life, such as Mandy Leong, managing director of local, homegrown cosmetic producer Chriszen Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Leong started selling beauty products in school while in Form 6. Within months, business was doing so well that she decided to expand her business in a night market to increase sales.

That led to a beauty products distribution business and the eventual establishment of Chriszen.

Today, Chriszen carries various beauty products including makeup and skincare and hair care products.

Leong will be sharing her growth and success story at the upcoming SOBA LAB, which will be held at MU Hotel in Ipoh on July 25.

SOBA LAB is organised by Star Media Group in conjunction with The Star Outstanding Business Awards (SOBA) 2018.

The half-day workshop will also feature a panel discussion centred around the use of technology to ease business operations and to help companies go digital. The panel discussion, titled “Technology: The Engine of Change” will be anchored by Digi chief business officer for its Business Division Eugene Teh, PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd chief executive officer and managing director Datuk Michael Tio and RHB Bank Bhd head of Group Transaction Banking Chung Chee Kai.

Participants will also be able to pick up pointers on obtaining financing and about going global from speakers from Credit Guarantee Corp (CGC) and Matrade.

Previous SOBA winner Googolplex Holdings Bhd group chief executive officer Christopher Liang will also be there to share some valuable lessons he has picked up in managing a business. Liang took home the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award at SOBA 2017.

Entry for SOBA LAB is free of charge but seats are limited. Interested participants are encouraged to register at to secure a seat on a first-come-first-served basis.

There will also be a SOBA Helpdesk at each location to cater to those interested to know more about SOBA awards.

SOBA is open to all local enterprises that are not part of a multinational group or listed group incorporated in Malaysia with foreign equity not exceeding 50%. Those who wish to participate may obtain the Awards submission pack from The Star or download the forms from the SOBA website.

Deadline for entries is Oct 19.
