JOHOR BARU: Sunway College Johor Baru will organise a Merdeka Fun Run on Aug 25, in conjunction with the National Day celebration.

Proceeds from the event will be channelled to the Bandar Seri Alam Rotary Haemodialysis Centre.

The centre’s management committee chairman Freddie Lee said the centre needs about RM980,000 in operating expenditure annually, to provide kidney dialysis treatment for patients with financial constraints.

“We need about RM850,000 to set up the centre, with each dialysis machine costing around RM50,000 and only able to treat between two and three patients daily,” he said, adding that the machine would only last for about five years.

Lee said the centre would need at least 10 machines to increase the number of patients and to be more efficient.

Sunway College Johor Baru Student Relations director Linda Lim said the flag-off ceremony for the 5km run would take place at around 7am and hoped more participants would take part in this year’s event.

Some 400 runners took part in last year’s event.

“Participants will receive a T-shirt and finisher medal with participation fee at RM55 per person. Early birds who register before July 16 only pay RM40 each,” she said.
