ALOR GAJAH: Melaka government is proposing that pig rearing in Paya Mengkuang here be carried out in clusters using modern technology to resolve pollution problems.

State Agriculture, Entrepreneur Development and Agro-Based Industry Committee chairman Norhizam Hassan Baktee said he had discussed the idea with the pig rearers.

“If they agree, the state government plans to use technology from Germany or China,” he said after visiting a pig farm in Paya Mengkuang here.

It was reported that the pollution problems resulting from the pig rearing activities in Paya Mengkuang had caused prolonged turmoil without any effective solution, angering the local residents who have had to live with the smell from the river and affected areas.

He said he understood that the pig rearers did not have sufficient funds and had trouble getting bank loans to modernise their farming system.

Norhizam said the government would look for investors to finance the plan and the pig farmers could pay them rent.

He said pig rearing under one roof would make it easier for the farmers as they no longer had to worry about pollution and diseases as these would be handled by the investors.

He said cluster pig rearing would also make it easier for the authorities to monitor the situation from time to time.

He added that there were currently 36 pig farms in Paya Mengkuang with 27 farmers. - Bernama
