MIRI: This is the first time in the history of Sarawak and Malaysia that only one Sarawakian is a full minister in the Federal Cabinet.
Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) is concerned with this development as it signals a serious erosion of Sarawakian representation at the national policy-making body, said SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting.
Ting, who is Piasau assemblyman, said Sarawak had at least eight full ministers in the Federal Cabinet at any one time during the premiership of Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak.
And, he noted that this latest development may contradict Pakatan Harapan’s promise of giving Sarawakians say.
Ting said yesterday that SUPP was glad that Sarawak PKR chairman and Selangau MP Baru Bian has been appointed the new Works Minister.
“However, our party is concerned that Bian is the only full minister from Sarawak.
“SUPP also congratulates Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chien Jen for his appointment as deputy minister for Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Cooperatives Affairs.
“In the last Cabinet, Sarawak had eight full ministers,” he said.
Ting said SUPP is of the view that Sarawak deserves more ministers and deputy ministers in Putrajaya.
Considering the fact that Pakatan Harapan Sarawak has 12 parliamentary seats, the lack of a Sarawakian presence in the Federal Cabinet is not a good development.
“Sarawak is also the biggest state in Malaysia in terms of size.
“That means that we must have more ministers and deputy ministers to cater to the state’s needs.
“Anyway, SUPP wishes Bian and Chong all the best and we hope they can look into the needs of Sarawak effectively,” said Ting.
He urged Bian and Chong to look into the current needs of Sarawak and fight for the interests and rights of Sarawak within Malaysia.
