MODERN drinking straws were merely invented as its creator Marvin Chester Stone was tired of getting lemon seeds into his mouth whenever he was having a sip of lemonade.

Stone also introduced the paper-based straws in replacement of natural rye grass straws used in the 19th century, which were undesirable as it imparted a grassy flavour in beverages.
