BE SWEPT off your feet by not one, but two musical productions back to back this June and July.

Presented by Pan Productions, the cast of That’s Entertainment – A Night of Radio Hits! and Company is set to transport theatre lovers to a different realm in each distinctive show with some of Malaysia’s best musical talents.

From June 28 to July 7, That’s Entertainment – A Night of Radio Hits! will thrill audiences with a dazzling array of chart-topping tunes from the 1950s right up to the present era, featuring works by the likes of music legends such as Elvis Presley and P. Ramlee, iconic songstresses Anita Mui and Madonna, as well as popular artistes Adele and Wonder Girls.

This two-hour jukebox musical promises to be a highly entertaining concert complete with a live band and multimedia projections.

Pan Productions artistic director Nell Ng said the show would feature an exciting vocal line-up of renowned talents and new faces.

“Every song was chosen carefully to bring such diverse eras and genres to life.

“In the process, I had listened to 30 songs from each era starting from the 1950s, shortlisted only two from the era, and recreated them to give these radio hits a fresh breath of life.

“This show will definitely have the audience singing and dancing to a night to remember,” said Ng, who is also the musical’s director, choreographer and writer, alongside Dennis Law as the music director.

After strolling down memory lane with music from the top of the pops, comes the Malaysian premiere of the iconic Broadway musical comedy, Company, by acclaimed composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, from July 12 to 14.

“With the action being set in Kuala Lumpur, the two-and-a-half-hour musical about bachelorhood versus marriage will have you laughing and tearing at the same time, while leaving you relating to the joys and tribulations of relationships,” said Ng, who is the director and choreographer of Company, with Khoo Khe Sin and Loh Ui Li as music directors.

Taking place on the night of his 35th birthday, Bobby, played by Peter Ong, struggles to think of a wish to make as he blows out his birthday candles.

The lone bachelor, surrounded by his married friends, is uncertain whether he should simply be happy with his lot or wish for a partner.

Over a series of dates and conversations, Bobby attempts to understand the pros and cons of marriage and begins to make sense of his bachelorhood.

Ong will be reprising his role as Bobby, having performed it to critical acclaim in Singapore in 2012.

“This production opened in Broadway in 1970 and remains relevant until today, being performed in different parts of the world.

“This is a great chance to catch this all-local-cast musical right here in Malaysia,” said Ong, who is also the executive producer of Pan Productions.

Hit songs from this musical include You Could Drive A Person Crazy, Ladies Who Lunch and Being Alive.

Ng added that the cast of both musicals had been undergoing intense rehearsals daily, where some were in both shows playing different characters.

Lynn Tan will perform a Chinese classic by Ge Lan – I Want Your Love – together with Mae Elliessa and Mia Sara Shauki in That’s Entertainment – A Night of Radio Hits! while taking on the role of April in Company.

Meanwhile, Mae will perform I’ll Be There by Michael Jackson with Izen Kong in the jukebox musical and play Kathy in the iconic Broadway musical comedy.

Joining them on both stages are Ashley Tan, Nikki Palikat and Dina Nadzir, who agreed preparing for back-to-back shows was a challenge but a fun process.

That’s Entertainment – A Night of Radio Hits! will be rocking the stage from June 28 to July 7. The shows start at 8.30pm from Tuesdays to Saturdays, and Saturdays and Sundays will have 3pm shows.

Company hits the theatre from July 12 to 14, with showtimes at 8.30pm and an extra 3pm show on July 14 (Saturday).

The shows will be held at Pentas 2, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac). Tickets are priced at RM158 and RM178, and can be purchased from Celcom users are entitled to exclusive discounts through the Celcom rewards promotion.
