SMILES abounded as underprivileged children from Pertubuhan Kebajikan Nasyiatul Aisyiyah enjoyed a festive treat at Queensbay Mall in Penang.

Ushered to a courtyard at the shopping centre’s Central Atrium, the group of 50 first took in Gamelan and traditional dance performances.

In between numbers, eyes wandered around in admiration of the Bangsawan-styled backdrop put up for the Irama Aidilfitri-themed celebrations.

The kids aged five to 15 were then surprised with goodie bags and duit raya contributed by tenants AEON and Shashas Collection.

Queensbay Mall senior operations manager K. David Raj then presented a donation of RM3,000 to the home’s founder Rohani Hussainsa.

“We believe in the spirit of sharing and caring, especially during festive seasons when these underprivileged kids need more love and attention.

“We do not want them to be left out from the joy of the celebration,” David said during the gathering.

Themed Kasih Aidilfitri Majlis Berbuka Puasa, it was the home’s third treat at the mall in three years. But it was no less exciting for the kids.

Rohani said: “It really makes the kids happy. Psychologically, it helps that they get to come out and jalan-jalan.

“It warms our heart to see the private sector coming forward to organise such joyful celebrations.”

Rohani, who described herself as a foster grandmother, set up the home 25 years ago in Balik Pulau. Today, it also has two centres in Sungai Dua.

She and her team of guardians have seen hundreds of less fortunate kids come through the doors, and take pride in giving them a better future.

“We survive solely on public donations, and need about RM10,000 a month to operate. All our staff are volunteers,” she added.

Following a group photo session, the group adjourned to ‘The Chicken Rice Shop’ to enjoy a Berbuka Puasa session.

Joining them were CapitaLand Retail Malaysia general manager of mall management (Northern Region) Selina Ng as well as the mall’s assistant centre manager Trish Ang and senior leasing manager Lee Sue Ling.

The mall’s festive programme continues till Hari Raya — with the highlight being the Pandora Jewellery Showcase at 3pm on June 9 that also features apparel from Shashas.

Before that, there is a Riang-Ria Aidilfitri Malay Traditional Dance Performance tomorrow and Simfoni Aidilfitri Gamelan Music Performance on Sunday.

Another traditional dance display takes place on June 10. All start at 2pm and will take place at the Central Atrium.

A Bazaar Ramadan is also ongoing till June 13 at the Ground Floor, North Zone, offering a vast array of festive goodies and essentials.
