THIS year’s edition of The Star Outstanding Business Awards (SOBA) will see the introduction of a new Top-Of-The-Class Award: Best Use of Technology.

Star Media Group Bhd group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai announced the new award category at the launch of SOBA 2018 at Menara Star, Petaling Jaya.

The award was introduced to recognise businesses that display effective use and integration of technology in order to give themselves an edge in today’s rapidly changing market.

With the awards entering its ninth year, Wong reminisced on the outstanding stories of past winners, whom he said had found their success through pure hard work, ingenuity and creativity.

“Our nation’s economy relies strongly upon the success of small and medium enterprises (SMEs),” said Wong.

He said that according to a 2017 World Bank report, SMEs account for 97% of businesses and 67% of employment in Malaysia, contributing up to 36% of our gross domestic product (GDP).

“At its core, SOBA recognises the important role local businesses play in the building of our nation,” said Wong.

“SOBA seeks to inspire and encourage local businesses, as well as highlight the impact of smaller businesses in our country’s economic growth.”

Following a ceremony to acknowledge all event sponsors and partners, RHB Investment Banking economic research head Peck Boon Soon gave a special talk titled, “Post GE Market Outlook - Opportunities and Risks”.

SOBA is open to all local enterprises that are not part of a multinational group or listed group incorporated in Malaysia with foreign equity not exceeding 50%.

Those who wish to participate may obtain the awards submission pack from The Star or download the forms at www.soba.com.my.
