Nor Hafizah (carrying toddler) listening to a complaint by local resident Tan Say Sin, 50, during her walkabout in Taman Pokok Sena.

LAWYER Nor Hafizah Othman from Barisan Nasional is the first woman candidate to be nominated to contest the Permatang Berangan state seat in Tasek Gelugor.

“It’s an honour to be chosen although Barisan has never practised gender discrimination.

“We are all the same. It is about getting the job done and being able to carry out our duties well.

“Maybe it will be a little challenging as people here have not had a woman as an assemblyman.

“They are only used to Telok Ayer Tawar being synonymous with a female candidate. Maybe it’s time for a change. I hope the people here can give me a chance to serve them,” she said to reporters after visiting shophouses in Taman Pongsu Seribu in Permatang Berangan, Tasek Gelugor recently.

She was referring to five-term Telok Ayer Tawar assemblyman Datuk Jahara Hamid, who is not contesting this time.

Nor Hafizah said if she wins the seat, she would focus on making the constituency an educational hub as well as helping families generate a second income.

“My aim is to look into the needs of all the people here.

“I want to encourage people, especially women, to start online businesses as it can help them generate extra income,” she said.
