JOHOR BARU: State DAP committee member Tan Hong Pin (pic) has promised a commuter train system in Skudai if Pakatan Harapan forms the new state government.
The Mengkibol incumbent assemblyman said (improving) public transportation was among the 17 key points in his manifesto for Skudai.
“Skudai is the heart of Iskandar Malaysia, but it is behind in terms of development compared to other areas.
“We want to fully utilise the cargo tracks connecting Pasir Gudang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas and upgrade it to a city commuter system that will benefit everyone in Skudai and other areas,” he said, adding that the improvement of public transportation, especially the commuter system, was achievable for Pakatan.
Tan said Barisan Nasional failed in providing a better public transport system as the current system was not user-friendly for the elderly, pregnant mothers and the disabled.
He added that his manifesto also focused on solving housing woes in Skudai as not many people could afford to buy a home there because of high property prices.
“The caretaker government did not fully understand that not many people, especially the younger generation, were able to afford a home, causing them to move elsewhere.
“Once we take over Kota Iskandar, we will update the development plans in Skudai and priority will be given to (building) affordable homes,” he said, adding that there were about 80,000 households in the area.
