BARISAN Nasional's Kuala Langat parliamentary candidate Shahril Hamdan has turned to social media, using WhatsApp, Instagram and YouTube to woo voters, especially those casting their votes for the first time.
GE14 will see 20,249 (out of 102,406) people voting for the first time.
The new voters could be a deciding factor on May 9 for the parliamentary seat, as well as the three state seats of Sijangkang, Banting (formerly known as Telok Datok) and Morib.
There is certainly an air of uncertainty, with Sijangkang having 8,763 new voters, Morib 6,817 and Banting 4,669.
A policial science graduate of the London School of Economics and Political Science, 32, stressed that the number of new voters in Kuala Langat was significant.
“Majority of new voters are better informed, have paper qualifications or are skilled, trained and tech-savvy. This allows them to keep abreast of the current news.
"Most of them can take a stand and are assessing the candidates.
“Yes, these first-timers could also have an impact on the election. Most of them are able to give constructive opinions that influence their friends.
Shahril (below, left) said it was good to see this type of mature thinking.
