INDEPENDENT candidate for Batu, P. Prabakaran, 22, has begun his campaign with the release of a six-minute clip on YouTube targeting youths in the constituency.
The six-minute-long video narrated by him features a short introduction to Prabakaran, explains why he decided to take up the challenge, and why people should vote for him.
The YouTube video also features interviews with members of the public who support his political cause and endorse the participation of youths in politics.
“Youths have to commit to the development of the nation at a young, early stage,” said the 22-year-old law student.
“What we really want is for youths to create change. This is different from in the past,” he said.
According to Prabakaran, participation in the political process could help young people to become stronger and tougher together.
The third-year student said he hoped more young people would follow in his footsteps in the coming general elections.
Prabakaran will face Gerakan vice-president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau, Batu PAS chief Azhar Yahya, and another independent candidate, Datuk Panjamorthy Muthusamy in a four-cornered fight for the Batu parliamentary seat.
Tian Chua, who was supposed to contest under the PKR ticket, was disqualified from running for incurring a fine of RM2,000 from the Shah Alam High Court on May 2, reduced from RM3,000 from an earlier judgement, for outraging the modesty of a police officer by using foul language.
He has since filed a court action against the Election Commission and its returning officer for disqualifying him on nomination day last Saturday.
The suit also seeks a court declaration to allow Chua, a PKR vice-president, to contest the seat on May 9.
