A GROUP of around 50 people, led by Gerakan, took part in a demonstration calling for the removal of the Puchong Selatan toll plaza of the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP) on Sunday morning.

Datuk Ang Chin Tat, the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Puchong parliamentary seat, organised the demonstration and took to distributing flyers on his own personal manifesto for the Puchong constituency.

Calling for the removal of tolls in Puchong were the highlight of his agenda, which he said was based on complaints he had received.

“I have received many complaints from Puchong residents saying that the toll was a burden to them,” said Ang.

“I ask for the voters to give me a chance this election so that I can close all tolls in Puchong and reduce the burdens of citizens, especially those living in Puchong.”

Ang said the Puchong parliamentary constituency was home to over 96,000 voters, but he estimated that more than 200,000 motorists used the LDP stretch here regularly.

Taman Putra Permai resident K.Subramaniam said residents from as far as Subang Jaya used the toll when they travel to the Selangor wholesale market in Pusat Bandar Putra Permai, Seri Kembangan.

“When going to the wholesale market, they have to pay the toll twice. In addition to that, they have to pay for parking at the Selangor wholesale market,” he said.

The demonstrators’ lively chanting and large picket signs attracted the attention of passing motorists, who had mixed reactions.

Several drivers honked at the group, with most waving at them or taking pictures, while a few bold drivers flashed rude gestures before speeding away.

Having prepared a memorandum for the management of the toll plaza, Ang handed the letter to a toll plaza employee who came to see what the commotion was about.

A few police officers were also present to keep the peace and prevent the demonstration from getting out of hand.

Puchong will see a three-way fight as DAP incumbent Gobind Singh Deo, 45, defends his seat against newcomers Ang, 48, and Subang Jaya Municipal councillor and Puchong PAS election director Mohamad Rosharizan Mohd Rozlan, 45.
