SMK St Michael to perform Disney’s Moana

The cast of SMK St Michael Ipoh rehearsing for the performance of Moana in the school’s hall.

SMK St Michael Ipoh will be staging a play based on the Disney hit film Moana at its school hall from Apr 27 to 29 at 7.45pm.

The story is about a titular character, the daughter of a village chief, who sets out on a journey to save her people when a blight strikes their island.

She eventually meets the demi-god Maui, to restore the “Heart of Te Fiti” in its rightful place and bring serenity back to the island.

The lead character, Moana, will be played by 19-year-old Upper Sixer Koey Hor Yan while Maui will be played by Form Five student M.F. Anselm Francis, 17.

The play is directed by teacher Corrine Mah, who has previously selected other Disney films for school’s annual showcase.

Since 2005, the school has performed several Disney favourites including Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Mulan and Hercules.

Last year, their play was adapted from the movie Frozen.

School teacher Wong Chin Fui, who is helping with the promotion of the school play, said Mah chose Moana because of its main theme.

“The theme is about knowing who you are.

“It is a sound message for the students to believe in themselves.

“The lead character is young and has great determination, which also reflects the spirit of a true Michaelian,” she said, adding that the planning and audition for the production started in October last year.

“Rehearsal sessions involving the cast, musicians and the entire production team started in January,” she said.

Wong said the play provides a platform for the students to exhibit their talents in performing arts.

“St. Michael is constantly searches for various avenues to refine and further improve the quality of its education,” she said.

She added that funds raised from the performance will go towards upgrading and enhancing the school’s facilities.

Tickets are priced at RM20 and RM50.
