KOTA KINABALU: The story of the sacrifice of a beautiful woman Solungkoi from the legend of the Tamparuli bridge will be brought to life during Sabah Fest 2018 from May 4 to 6.

‘Solungkoi’ is a musical theatre show which tells the story of a beautiful young woman who became a human sacrifice to appease the river spirits.

Among those taking part are Hosiani Jaimis, Dane Kovacs, Jayfrejoe Japrin, Dayang Hasnah Ibrahim and a special appearance by Sakinah.

“When I was selected to play ‘Solungkoi’, I grabbed the opportunity to improve my acting skills.

“I have acted in films, but not in musical theatre.

“I know it will be much harder to perform live on stage”, said Hosiani, an online TV announcer who goes by the name Keewon.

Playing the role of an inquisitive and charming British engineer who built Tamparuli bridge during the colonial days will be Kovacs, an Australian citizen who moved here almost five years ago.

“I have been to a couple of Sabah Fests before.

“I thought it would be interesting to give acting a try,” he said in a statement from the organisers.

Jayfrejoe, who has acted in musical theatre before, will be playing the role of a jealous local villager.

“I have always wanted to play the part of a villain to challenge myself.”

Sakinah said it was a dream come true to be able to take part in Sabah Fest.

“I have been longing for this chance since two years ago when I attended my first Sabah Fest,” she said.

Tickets for ‘Sabah Fest 2018 - Solungkoi’ cost RM50.

The shows will start at 8pm daily and will run for three nights.

There is no admission fee for the exhibitions.

Sabah Fest is billed as an entertaining cultural extravanganza that incorporates dance, music, fashion, food and more.

It is a blend of cultural and natural heritage that is richly embedded in folklore and considered one of Sabah’s premiere events.

Sabah Fest 2018 will kick-start the Kaamatan (Harvest Festival) month.

The event is organised by Sri Pelancongan Sabah Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sabah Tourism Board.
