Appeal of RM1 homemade doughnuts

PEKAN NENAS: A bakery that sells homemade doughnuts with sumptuous toppings and fillings at only RM1 per piece has become a big hit, attracting not only locals but also customers from Singapore.

Operating since December 2016 at the Masjid Jamek Pekan Nenas grounds here, Kedai Donut RM1 has doughnuts with toppings ranging from mocha and chocolate to cheese, strawberry and mint.

Its owner Noor Haza Mardikon, 44, said usually on Friday, some customers from Singapore would order the doughnuts in large quantities to donate them to mosque-goers.

“Normally, they will place their orders through phone calls or text messages and I will give out the doughnuts at the mosque,” she said when met at Pekan Nenas here.

Noor Haza said the toppings were made daily using recipes by her husband and the chocolate flavour was her top seller.

While the regular-sized doughnuts are sold at RM1 each, the shop even offers mini doughnuts at 50sen per piece.

“My husband and I decided to offer customers the snack at a very reasonable price as we want to help lessen the burden of the people especially the needy,” said the former teacher.

She also said that since they were one of the only few bakeries operating in the area, doughnut orders for birthday parties had also been flooding in.

The mother of six said that apart from Pekan Nenas and Singapore, some of their customers would travel all the way from Johor Baru, Benut, Pontian and Batu Pahat to buy the doughnuts along with other desserts.

“We are looking forward to expanding our business and we plan to allow customers to choose and put their choice toppings onto the doughnuts in the future.

“We have always wanted to give the best service to our customers and are open to constructive criticism that will help improve our services,” she said.
