THE National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has formed a special committee to investigate the pipe burst incident at the Sungai Selangor 3 Water Treatment Plant (LRA SSP3) last week which prolonged the Klang Valley's water disruption.
SPAN chairman Datuk Liang Teck Meng said the three-person committee will be headed by Datuk Lim Chow Hock.
“We are also awaiting a report from Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) on the pipe burst incident.
"The report is due to be out on March 23,” said Liang during a press conference at SPAN’s office in Cyberjaya.
He refuted claims that SPAN did not carry out its work responsibly in the entire incident.
“At the end of Jan 2018, SPAN identified that the LRA SSP3 in Bukit Badang recorded a drop in water level. It was operating at an average of 820 million litres per day (mld) last year, but that dropped to 795 mld in January,” said Liang, adding that the plant’s design capacity was for 800 mld.
“SPAN did a site visit to LRA SSP3 on Feb 5 to do an audit on the pump system. On Feb 15, SPAN wrote a letter to SPLASH directing them to immediately rectify the broken pipes.”
Liang stressed that there was no elements of sabotage in the incident and urged all parties to not politicise the issue of water.
The incident caused an extended water disruption that affected some 2.8 million users in seven districts in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
