Club to hold weekend organ donation awareness drive

NATIONAL Transplant Resource Centre says that only about 400,000 Malaysians are registered as organ donors, which is a mere 1.3% of the country’s 30 million population.

The disappointing figure has inspired Rotary International District 3300 governor Dr Manohur Kurup to not only take on the task of promoting organ donation awareness but also to increase the number of donors in Malaysia as his signature project for his 2017/18 term.

Since the launch of the project in July last year, numerous Rotary Clubs in District 3300 have organised campaigns in their cities to promote the cause and further identify barriers that affect those who are unwilling, uncertain or unaware of the concept of organ donation.

“It was only after I had started this project that I realised there are two important factors to consider – one is to create awareness and only then to encourage the public to register as organ donors.

“It is not that people are possessive over their organs, the problem is the majority do not know what they are signing up for or how the process works,” Dr Manohur said.

In collaboration with the National Transplant Resource Centre and in full support of Dr Manohur’s signature project, the Group 14 members of District 3300, which consist of the Rotary Clubs of Bandar Sunway, Bangsar, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and USJ, are banding together to organise a large-scale organ donation awareness campaign this weekend.

It will be held on March 3 at Space @ XOX, Lot F1.71, Level 1, Blue Atrium, Sunway Pyramid, from 11am to 5pm.

There will be on-site registration for organ donation as well as a blood donation drive.
