MELAKA: The Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry’s RM300mil allocation for two off-river storage (ORS) projects in the state will ensure clean water supply even during the dry season.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron (pic) said the allocation for the project at Chinchin in Jasin and Lubok Cina in Alor Gajah was also for uninterrupted clean water supply when major floods occurred during the monsoon season.
He said through the ORS project, clean water production by Syarikat Air Melaka Berhad (SAMB) was expected to increase to 890 million litres per day by 2020, from the current production rate of 580 million litres per day.
Speaking at SAMB’s monthly assembly at Seri Negeri, Idris said the state needs long-term solutions to ensure adequate water supply in Melaka.
“The ORS project will help reduce dependency on water resources purchased from Johor via Sg Muar, and will reduce cost of raw water and electricity by RM1.5mil per month.
“It will involve the construction of several ponds that will serve as mitigation measures to prevent flooding during the monsoon season, and the water stored in the pond will be pumped out in the event of a drought,” he added.
