WHEN she was only nine Ooi Kooi Shee already picked up the skill of making nian gao (thnee kuih in Hokkien or kuih bakul) from her mother.

Her task was to knead the dough as she is the oldest among seven siblings. As time went by Ooi, now 65, slowly mastered the art of making nian gao which was becoming rare due to its laborious process.
