IT’S now mandatory in Penang for developers to install water-saving devices (WSD) in all new development projects here.

Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief executive officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa said Penang is the first state in the country to implement such a regulation.

“The mandatory installation of WSDs reflects Penang’s firm commitment of this policy for the benefit of the people and all businesses here,” he told a press conference in Komtar.

Jaseni said the State Executive Council approved the proposal for the mandatory installation of WSDs on Nov 28, last year.

“The next step is the necessary legal process for amendment and gazette in order for the Penang Island City Council and the Seberang Prai Municipal Council to enforce the new regulations.”

Jaseni said the PBAPP had installed various types of WSDs in its buildings since 2012.

“It can effectively reduce water consumption by between 14% and 87%.

“Countries such as Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the USA actively promote the WSDs,” he added.
