MELAKA: The contractor responsible for Sungai Klebang bridge works must remove the temporary steel structure that is endangering fishermen, said state transport and project rehabilitation committee chairman Datuk Lim Ban Hong.
Lim said the underwater structure was implanted at Sungai Klebang estuary to support a temporary bridge but the contractor had not removed it upon completion of the job.
“The structure is posing a danger to fishing boats and damaging their engines,” he said after visiting the Klebang fishing enclave here.
Lim said in the report submitted by the contractor to the state government, it was stated that the structure had been removed although it was not.
“The contractor should be made to compensate those who suffered damages due to the structure.
“I have told the contractor to remove the structure as soon as possible,” he added.
Recently, fisherman Nordin Mohd Yusof, 67, claimed that he suffered huge losses after his boat’s engine hit the structure.
Nordin said the incident occurred when he was heading to the fishing jetty after fishing along the Straits of Malacca.
Lim said the waterway was the only route for 26 fishermen from the area to get to the sea for their fishing activities.
