Miri unveils plans to ease traffic congestion

MIRI: Major road improvements are needed here to cope with chronic traffic congestion.

Sarawak Assistant Tourism Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the ministry and the state’s Public Works Department (JKR) identified areas to be improved as Tudan, Pujut 3, Jalan Miri-Bintulu, Airport Road, Jalan Bypass to Miri Airport, Jalan Lutong Kuala Baram and Jalan Cahaya-Hospital.

“We will look into upgrading roads connecting Miri Airport, Miri Hospital, Kuala Baram and Bintulu in order to ease severe congestion.

“Residents of Jalan Koniffer, in Tudan have also requested for a new U-turn at Tudan road.

“Additionally, an overhead pedestrian bridge across Jalan Tudan has been proposed in front of SK Tudan,” he said after a meeting with JKR key officials here.

Lee said the aim of the meeting was to discuss and plan road development in Miri.

There are also plans to set up traffic lights in Pujut 3 to ease traffic flow.

Also present at the meeting were JKR northern regional manager Hipeni Alwi and assistant divisional engineer Stephen Ung. — By DAPHNE JOLLY
